VYUL Meeting Notes 1/2/06 Update:

Hello everyone!

First of all, I apologize for the late update. End of school festivities and then winter break pulled me right in. Anyway....

We discussed a whole slew of topics at the December 10th meeting.

Here's a run down of the discussion topics:

1) Ultimate Surveys. We worked on editing a survey that we plan on sending out to all Vermont schools asking for information on Ultimate at their school. It was brought up that we need to make sure that the right people get the survey. Sometimes the Athletic Director is the right person to talk to, but quite frequently it's someone else in the community. So in addition to sending out a letter to each school, I've been looking into finding addresses for student governments and other local organizations such as rec leagues. Any assistance in getting a master list of addresses together would be much appreciated. [I'll send out a copy of the letter soon -- I don't have access to it at the moment.]

2) Non-tournament games. Everyone thought that establishing a set state-wide game schedule would be beneficial. This could be done via email with this group. It's never to early to start planning :)

3) A state tournament. Allan and Luc are looking into possible locations.

4) Recommended tournaments. These are the tournaments that I recommend for newer teams:

Name - Date - Contact

Darrow - 4/15 or 16 - Scott Challener ( )
A very fun tourney in New Lebanon NY specifically for first and second year players. Definitely worth the trip.

Greenfield - TBA - Terry Plotkin ( )
One of the very few tournaments with a mixed division. Lots of fun.

St. Johnsbury - 5/20-21(most likely) - Me
Date is not 100% set quite yet, but should be soon. Possibly a two day tourney. More info in the next couple weeks.

Northfield Mount Hermon - 4/29 - Mark Yates ( )
Well established tourney. B-division offers solid competition.

5) VYUL.org. I'm currenly working on a standalone site for the league. It should be online in the next couple weeks.

6) The next meeting. It seemed like a meeting sometime in February or March would be a good idea. How about Saturday 3/18?

That's all for now -- more info coming soon.

Happy New Year!

- Josh

Vermont Youth Ultimate
Coaches and Captains Meeting

Saturday, Dec. 10th
3 - 5pm
St. Johnsbury Academy, Severance 21

Over the past three years there has been a steady growth in Vermont Youth Ultimate. New teams are formed every day and more and more Vermont kids are playing on club teams.

To help facilitate this growth I would like to form a Vermont Youth Ultimate League. To get the process started there will be a Vermont Youth Ultimate meeting on Saturday, Dec. 10th from 3- 5pm at St. Johnsbury Academy. Anyone who is, or would like to be involved with Vermont Youth Ultimate is encouraged to attend.

Topics of discussion will include: spring game schedules, a state tournament (go Allan!), how to encourage other schools to start teams, how to lobby for Varsity status, UPA coaching clinics, how to structure the League, and many other topics.

If you plan on attending, please let me know so I can have a rough idea of how much food to order. Also, pass the word out to anyone out there who may be interested in attending the meeting.

Directions:

From the South: Take 91N to exit 20. Merge right on to rt. 5. After 100 yards take the first left up the hill. At the top of the hill make a hairpin left turn into campus (You'll see the Mayo Center on your right). Continue straight, passing the Morse Center on your right. Bear right after the gym and park anywhere in the lot.

From the North: Take 91S to exit 20. Merge on to rt. 2 east. After 1/3 mile (you'll pass the Fairbanks in on your right), you'll come up a hill. Stay staight and you'll come to a T intersection. Colby Hall will be right in front of you. Turn right, and bear right into campus (The Mayo center will be on your right.) Continue straight, passing the Morse Center on your right. Bear right after the gym and park anywhere in the lot.

To Severance 21: After parking, walk back to the Mayo Center (right next to the hairpin turn). Severance is across the street, facing the Mayo Center. Enter through the doorway facing the street. Room 21 is on the second floor.

St. Johnsbury is a very small town. Once you're in town, anyone will be able to tell you where the Academy is, and once you're on campus, anyone will be able to tell you how to find Severance. (There will also be a bunch of signs up.)

Planning to attend:
1) Josh Seamon (St.Johnsbury)
2) Allan Brooks (Rutland)
3) Raymond Coffey (Essex)
4) Kurt Johnson (MMU)
5) Chance (VCS - Burlington)
6) Chris Mayone (Waitsfield)
7) Anne Watson (Montpelier)
